Food Pantry
Over one hundred and fifty families are served
year round with nutritious frozen, canned and fresh foods.
The Food Pantry is affiliated with the Food
Bank of South Jersey
Dress For Success Closet
Clothes are collected and distributed free of charge
to the community on a first-come, first-served basis. Each week
families select from the program inventory, which results in
our addressing the clothing needs of hundreds of people.
After School Program
Monday through Thursday during the school
year, youth
gather at the center after school to do their homework. They then
work on the computers or just play games. Socialization skills
are being developed and grades in school are routinely reaching
"A" level and staying there over the long haul. We
are very excited about this!
Computer Literacy
We offer computer literacy classes
to teach community members to use Microsoft Office,
operating systems, and familiarity with computer hardware.
We once trained 25 people each week, but currently we are down to a
only a few working computers. We need more good solid
computers, not ancient throwaways. If your corporation or home has at least
one or more Pentium IV-based or better computers no longer
in use, please contact our
Executive Director. We also need the safe, LCD screens.
Youth Summer Camp
In the summer of 2008 we continued our summer
camp program. Approximately fifty Camden
youths got the opportunity to participate in Youth Summer
Camp. In addition, a number of important and fun events have
grown out of the Youth Summer Camp. This is one of our cornerstone
programs and we are proud to play a positive part in shaping
the minds and experiences of our future leaders.
Here are some words from a
2008 Summer Camp Counselor:
"Living throughout the rough city of Camden
is one of the worst criticisms we as a community have to deal
with time after time. Although many outsiders may view our
“HOME” as violent and misleading towards the youth; they leave
out the positive efforts we try to create to keep our city
together and healthy. Along with these positive efforts, which
includes a variety of churches, recreation programs, summer
school programs and many more. But, one that outshone them all
is the “Hope Community Outreach Center” which is located on 1299
Morton Street. Because it is located in one of the most
dangerous part of town known as Polock they still try hard to
give to the community. In the month of July Hope Community
Outreach Center gathered a group of students and volunteers to
make lemonade to raise money to help out with the center.
Another former activity was taking the students to the
Riversharks game located at the River Sharks stadium. And many
more outstanding opportunities giving back to the community.
Despite the hard times such as money for trips or food and games
they some how find a way to get past these hard times by finding
another way. They either give money out of their own pockets or
begin fundraisers. Overcoming differences is what Hope Community
Outreach Center strives to succeed in. Giving a better living in
the community and when there’s hope there’s a way! Speaking for
others and myself it is a huge privilege to work around hard
working people who want a better community. In conclusion it
would be a huge pleasure if we could have more helping hands to
support us and our journey to creating a differences in the
community and in the world." -Written
